On September 11, 2025, at the Steinway & Sons Flagship Store in Milan, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s 130th birthday was celebrated along with the tenth anniversary of the Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco Collection, published by Edizioni Curci in collaboration with CIDIM – Comitato Nazionale Italiano Musica. Quartetto Adorno [Edoardo Zosi, Liù Silvia Pellicciari, Benedetta Bucci, and Maria Salvatori] and the pianist Alessandro Marangoni delighted the audience by performing two works featured on their recordings for Naxos: the first, devoted to Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s quartets, has already received wide critical acclaim; the second, featuring his quintets, will be released in early 2026—and is eagerly awaited.
Laura Moro, Editorial Director and Head of Classical and Printed Music at Edizioni Curci, began the evening with remarks on the human and artistic journey of the Florentine composer, and on the origins of the Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco Collection. Conceived by the late Angelo Gilardino, the series continues to publish editions of previously unavailable works preserved in The Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco Papers at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. To date, the collection has made available more than thirty-five pieces that had been forgotten for far too long.
Diana Castelnuovo-Tedesco, the composer’s granddaughter, participated in the event on behalf of the composer’s family. She recalled Maestro Gilardino’s work and his unshakable conviction that Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s music must be brought out of obscurity and performed. Diana thanked the Edizioni Curci team for their invaluable collaboration and expressed her gratitude to the musicians and to Naxos for the essential role they play in bringing this music to life:
Music, in order to be appreciated, must be heard. For many years, Naxos has been producing wonderful recordings in collaboration with today’s finest artists. Mario’s music is always beautiful, but it is also complex. My grandfather wrote his works for the greatest interpreters of his time—for artists who understood him and shared his artistic vision.
I am deeply grateful to Alessandro Marangoni and to the Quartetto Adorno, who always rise to the extraordinary level my grandfather would have expected. They are outstanding ambassadors for this music, performing it as it is meant to be heard and introducing it to new audiences.
